What are the major rituals and traditions of Tamil weddings?

After matching the horoscope, finalizing the wedding date and drafting the marriage agreements, the next pre-wedding ceremony is Panda Kaal Muhurtham. This is a pooja ceremony organized by both the families at a temple or one of their houses. They pray for the wedding to happen without any problem or trouble. It is mostly planned a day before the wedding.

The next ceremony is where the bride-to-be seeks blessings from the older married women of the family. This ritual is known as Sumangali Prarthana. All the married women who take part in this ceremony dress up in nine-yard sarees and are called Sumangali.

In Pallikal Thellicha, for good fortune, earthen pots are decorated with sandalwood paste and vermillion. This ritual is performed by five or seven married women of the family. And inside each pot, nine different types of grains are put along with curd.

A sacred thread with turmeric is tied on the groom’s and bride’s wrists. This ceremony takes place separately and is done to protect the couple from evil. It is known as Vrutham.

In Naandi Shraddham, the groom and his family visit the bride’s family (on the morning of the day before the wedding day). The groom is welcomed by the bride’s family with a rosewater shower. Ten Brahmins are invited and are fed with traditional Tamil vegetarian meals. They are then offered some clothes, sweets, and nuts. This ceremony is done to seek their blessings and please the ancestors.

A formal engagement ceremony, Nishchayathram, takes place in every Tamil wedding. Rings are exchanged by the bride and groom. Gifts are also exchanged by families like new clothes, jewelry, fruits, etc.

The wedding day begins with Mangal Snanam where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom. And to cleanse it, holy water is poured by the elder women. After this, the couple proceeds to get ready.

Before heading towards the mandap, the bride has to perform a Gauri pooja. Meanwhile, the groom enters the wedding venue and announces to go off to Kashi. Then the father of the bride intercepts and asks him to marry her daughter. This ritual is known as Kashi Yatra.

With Jaimala, kanyadan and Saptapadi, other ceremonies are quite similar to any other Hindu Brahmin Wedding.
