What are some of the Bengali Rituals and Traditions

Bengali culture is considered to be one of the richest cultures in India. With time, regions tend to lose the authenticity of their culture by blending with the modern era. But Bengal has always kept its heritage alive. Famous for the soothing music, delicious cuisines, and beautiful red-white saree, the Bengali weddings are also super unique.

You will see the festivities of a Bengali wedding going for days. The vibrant colors can be seen in a Bengali wedding which makes it eye-pleasing. It is a perfect fusion of traditional rituals with a modern touch. The Bengali weddings may not be lavish or extravagant, but the intricate details are always kept in mind because of the rituals and traditions.

The preparations for the Bengali wedding start months before the main day. The pre-wedding functions start with the ceremony of Aashirwad where both the families meet and formally accept each other. Husked rice and trefoil leaves are put on the heads of the couple. And family members gift gold ornaments as a token of love.

The next ceremony is Al Budo Bhaat, popularly known as a bachelor/bachelorette party. Both the bride and groom celebrate the last few days of singlehood with their irrespective friends. In some families, the bride is made to wear the Sankha (bangle made from Conch Shells) and Pola (Red coral bangles) before the wedding day. The bangles are a sign of marital bliss. This ceremony is known as Sankha Porano.

The mother of the bride/groom with other women of the family fills a pitcher from the nearest water body. The water is used for the Haldi ceremony. This is called Jol Sowa. Then early in the morning on d-day, the bride and groom have to eat a meal (Sweet curd, rice flakes, bananas, sweets). The couple is expected to fast for the rest of the day.

For the Haldi ceremony, Gaye, holud, turmeric paste is prepared from fresh turmeric and is applied to the groom’s body. The rest of the turmeric is sent to the bride’s place along with the outfit for the ceremony. The water stored from the water body is used for the snan.

On the wedding day, the bride enters with her brothers who carry her in their hands and take seven full circles. They make sure to drop the bride to the altar. This ceremony is known as Saat Paak. The bride covers her face with betel leaves before entering and removes them after entering the altar. The groom and the bride steal the first look of each other at that time.

After this, there are ceremonies of Mala Badal (Jaimala exchange), Sampradan (Kanyadan), Yagna (Sacred Fire), Saptapadi (Saath Phere), Anjali (Offering made by souple) and Sindoor Daan (Applying Sindoor).
